Definition

Torsion springs are helical coil springs that exert a torque or rotary force. They can be coiled either left hand wind, right hand wind or in the case of double torsions, both hand winds.

Spring Action

The deflection/travel of torsion springs are determined by the diameter of the body, size of the wire and the number of coils.

When torque is applied to a torsion spring, the body length grows (because the spring is winding up and increasing body coil count) and the body diameter decreases.

Torsion springs should always wind up during operation and never unwind from the free/relaxed position and should be supported over a rod/mandrel whenever possible.

End Styles

The most common and economic type of end is tangential legs, picture “b” (straight off the body of the spring) which require less set up.

They can also be radial external, picture “c” (hooked), radial over-center, picture “d” (hinged) and axial, picture “a” (offset or lateralized).

These ends can be used in any combination along with different lengths, with bends and positioning.
